Speaker Rendon Announces Appointment to California Coastal Commission

SACRAMENTO— Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) today announced he has appointed Santa Cruz Supervisor Justin Cummings to the California Coastal Commission.

"I'm excited to be able to appoint Santa Cruz County Supervisor Justin Cummings to the California Coastal Commission," said Speaker Rendon. "His commitment to be an advocate for protecting the environment and ensuring coastal access for all Californians, including people of color, will be an asset to the Coastal Commission and our state."

He was elected as Third District Supervisor in November 2022 and is the first African American to serve on the County Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Cummings was the founding Program Director of the UCSC Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is former Santa Cruz Mayor and City Councilmember. He served on the Homeless Coordinating Committee for Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay Air Resources Board, and Santa Cruz Climate Action Task Force. Cummings holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a designated emphasis in Environmental Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Compensation for this appointment is $100 per day, and $12.50 for prep not to exceed 8 hours, plus actual and necessary expenses.
