Speaker Rendon Statement on Governor Newsom’s Signing of Legislative Climate Package

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO—Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D- Lakewood) today released the following statement on Governor Newsom signing historic climate bills advanced by the California Legislature:

"I am proud of the dozens of climate-related bills that the Assembly sent to the Governor this year, with 20 signed recently. This includes a landmark bill that establishes real carbon reduction goals that are legally binding. On top of the literal dozens of bills we have put forth in recent years, this activity shows California's dedication," said Speaker Rendon. "We are committed not only to slowing climate change and bringing it to a halt, but also to preparing California for the inevitable effects of wildfire, extreme heat and rising sea levels. These actions will help protect all Californians, particularly those in our most vulnerable communities. California is an incredible place to live, and we have to keep it that way. I thank my Assembly colleagues for their hard work, not just this year, but over many years, to make this happen."

Today's bill signing included AB 1279, the California Climate Crisis Act, by Asm. Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) and Asm. Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens). This bill legally sets the goal of the state to achieve statewide carbon neutrality no later than 2045, with an 85% emissions reduction target. Other Assembly climate bills signed include AB 1757 by Assemblymembers Cristina Garcia and Robert Rivas (D-Hollister), AB 1389 by Asm. Eloise Reyes (D-Colton), and AB 1909 by Asm. Laura Friedman (D-Glendale).

The Speaker appreciates the leadership of Assembly Natural Resources Chair Luz Rivas (D-San Fernando Valley), whose legislation on extreme heat, AB 2238, was recently signed by the Governor. Additionally, the Speaker is grateful for the work of Budget Subcommittee Chair Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) for the Legislature's many climate-related investments this year.
