Speaker Rendon Statement on Budget Proposal

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO— Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D- Lakewood) today released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s initial budget proposal:

“California’s challenge in hammering out a budget in good economic times is finding a way to embrace and prolong our progress, while securing our fiscal future.

The Governor has been talking with Assemblymembers about the 2020 budget for several months now. Almost all of his budget priorities are ones we share, such as increasing funding for preschools, making health care more affordable for working people and seniors, helping homeless Californians rebuild their lives, and moving toward a smaller prison system with better rehabilitation programs. Additionally, I will be looking for opportunities to add to last year’s $3.15 billion investment to pay down school district liabilities.

For the past decade, the legislature has helped lead California’s fiscal renaissance, stabilizing our budget with voter-approved taxes on millionaires and big corporations. These revenues have funded investments to help all Californians succeed. I look forward to working with the Governor, Senator Atkins, and my colleagues to finalize another balanced, on-time state budget in June.”
