Speaker Rendon’s Statement on Governor’s Signing of Senate Bill 307

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO — Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) issued the following statement on the signing of SB 307, requiring additional state review of the Cadiz Water Project in the Mojave Desert:

"I want to applaud Governor Gavin Newsom for signing this important bill into law. It guarantees appropriate oversight of a proposed water project that has the potential for causing long-lasting environmental damage.

We need to provide safe drinking water for all Californians, but we cannot do it at the expense of our state's environmental future. If the project is shown to be safe, it can proceed, but we cannot, and I will not, stand by and allow short-term profits to be the driving force of policy.

I thank the hardworking members of the Assembly and Senate who brought this bill forward and I thank the Governor for signing it."
