SACRAMENTO — Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) today released the following statement to announce his opposition to the Cadiz Water Project:
“The Cadiz Water Project is a textbook example of doing more harm than good. In exchange for providing a limited supply to some households in Southern California, the Cadiz Water Project would take water that is contaminated with Chromium 6 – and would need expensive cleaning – and then transport it for miles through existing aqueducts that serve millions of people. The Cadiz Water Project would also jeopardize the water source for threatened species of wildlife and pump water out of a desert environment where groundwater replenishment is limited. Additionally, the Cadiz Water Project is tainted by egregious conflicts of interest within the Trump Administration. As the author of the water bond approved by California voters in 2014, I spent months meeting with stakeholders from around the state working to discern good projects from bad. That experience compels me to oppose the Cadiz Water Project.”
Speaker Rendon and Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) sent a letter today to the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District to oppose to the district’s consideration of a purchase and sale agreement with the Cadiz Valley Water Project. That letter and a letter by Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) also opposing the agreement are attached.
