SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly delegation to El Salvador today met with President Salvador Sánchez Cerén and several other top government officials.
“Our conversation with President Sánchez Cerén centered on many of the concerns shared by California and El Salvador, notably the uncertain future of Salvadoran immigrants residing in our state,” said Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood). “We are grateful to the President for his partnership on this and other policy areas on which we can work together.”
The delegation got a first-hand perspective on the immigration issue during a meeting with Héctor Rodríguez, Director General of Migration and Immigration, and a tour of the Reception Center of Salvadoran Returnees, the facility charged with assisting returnees with a variety of social services, including shelter, educational programs, employment training, and health treatment facilities.
The delegation also met with other top Salvadoran officials, including Vice President Oscar Ortiz, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugo Martínez, and Minister of Public Works, Transport, Housing and Urban Development Eliud Ulises Ayala.
Additionally, Mark Johnson, Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy, briefed the delegation on the current state of diplomatic affairs between the U.S. and El Salvador.
Assemblymembers traveling in the delegation include Speaker Rendon and Assemblymembers Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles), Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno) and Mike Gipson (D-Carson). The delegation will go from February 14-17, 2018.
