SACRAMENTO — Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), a member of the University of California Board of Regents, issued the following statement on the Board’s scheduled vote to raise student fees by 2.7 percent:
“I oppose the fee increase proposed by UC President Janet Napolitano. The budget item presented to the Regents does not make a compelling case that this increase is necessary, and UC's argument that higher fees are actually good for most students is inconsistent with what I’ve heard from students.
“Additionally, I had asked President Napolitano to move the vote to the March Board of Regents meeting at UCLA so students would have more time to respond to the proposal and participate in the meeting.
“While today’s vote is unfortunate, the Assembly will continue our efforts to change the culture at UC so it will once again put students first.”
