SACRAMENTO — California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) today submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the federal government for information about recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The request seeks records on ICE’s national or California field office policies, including enforcement priorities and implementation of the President’s January 25, 2017 executive order and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly’s February 20, 2017 memorandum expanding immigration enforcement and targeting sanctuary cities. It also seeks records about the planning and execution of enforcement actions taken between February 1 and February 20.
“It is my obligation to protect all Californians, nearly 10 million of whom are immigrants,” Rendon said. “We need to have this information. They, the immigrants, and we, the Legislature, need to know what we’re facing so we can deal with it appropriately.”
“Despite saying he’d only target dangerous criminals, President Trump’s executive orders target practically every undocumented person in California,” de León said. “Making matters worse ICE is clearly violating their public policy of not targeting immigrants in churches, courts or schools and are returning to the bad old days of random sweeps netting many law-abiding immigrants. The lack of transparency by ICE is creating havoc and confusion in communities across the state and that has to change. It’s time for ICE to come clean on what they’re doing and how they intend to operate going forward.”
