Update to L.A. River Master Plan Aligns Upper & Lower River Restoration Plans
Sacramento, CA – The State Assembly unanimously voted today to pass Assembly Bill 530, Assemblyman Anthony Rendon’s (D-Lakewood) legislation that spurs much-needed revitalization of the entire L.A. River.
“The L.A. River is a natural resource that all communities in our region should have access to,” Rendon said. “The unanimous support of the Assembly, along with community and elected leaders from throughout Los Angeles County, highlights the wide consensus backing this effort.”
AB 530 establishes a local working group tasked with updating the Los Angeles River Master Plan to develop a revitalization plan for the Lower River consistent with the existing Upper River plan. The Lower River plan would be designed to enhance the county master plan for the entire river.
“Our rivers, creeks, and lands do not recognize political jurisdictional boundaries,” wrote a coalition of 20 park advocacy, environmental justice, and water quality organizations supporting AB 530. “We believe that AB 530 starts a conversation about how the entire river watershed can be managed collaboratively which is positive step for the entire L.A. River.”
The Rivers and Mountains Conservancy will staff the working group, which will be eligible for state funding from Proposition 1, the 2014 water bond authored by Rendon.
AB 530 now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
Assemblyman Anthony Rendon is serving in his second term representing the 63rd Assembly District, which includes the cities and communities of Bell, Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, North Long Beach, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, and South Gate. Rendon is chairman of the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Commerce and serves on the following committees: Water, Parks and Wildlife; Natural Resources; Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security; and Appropriations.
