Sacramento, CA – The Assembly Business & Professions Committee passed AB 512, authored by Assembly Member Rendon and sponsored by Los Angeles County, on a bipartisan 13-0 vote.
AB 512 extends a law to allow out-of-state health care providers to volunteer at non-profit health events like Los Angeles’ CareNow and CareHarbor Health Events and the Remote Area Medical clinics held in Sacramento and Oakland. In 2012 alone, these events served more than 28,000 people and even more could be served if qualified out-of-state medical practitioners are allowed to volunteer their services.
“There are more than two million uninsured people in Los Angeles County. Many of these individuals rely on government or non-profit sponsored health events to receive medical screenings, services and treatment,” stated Assembly Member Anthony Rendon, “Even after Affordable Care Act implementation, 1 million people in L.A. County are estimated to remain uninsured. We need these free health events to provide care to the remainder of the medically uninsured population in L.A. County.”
