Assemblywoman Burke Measure Gives Certified Nurse-Midwives a Greater Role

(Sacramento) – Expanding the role of certified nurse-midwives is the goal of Assemblywoman Autumn Burke’s (D-Inglewood) legislation, AB 2682, that would allow certified nurse-midwives to handle normal pregnancy and childbirth without the supervision of a physician. Assembywoman Burke became a Mom through a surrogate who valued the role of midwives and gave birth to Burke's daughter using the skills and care of a midwife. “People have asked me why I am so committed to this issue and I can only say this: how do you show respect for the person who gave her body so that you could have the greatest gift of life, to be a parent?” asked Assemblywoman Burke as she presented AB 2682 to the State Assembly. “You make sure she always has the choice when it comes to her body and how she continues to give that gift.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
