Assemblywoman Burke Responds to Governor’s Veto of Bill Expanding Financial Aid Benefits to Returning Veterans

For immediate release:

Assemblywoman Autumn R. Burke (D-Inglewood) issued the following statement in response to Governor Jerry Brown’s veto of AB 1361:

“The Governor’s veto of AB 1361 was very disheartening. Leaving military service should not be the end of our veterans’ story but the beginning of their next chapter. They deserve as much assistance as we can give them during their transition to civilian life. This bill would have kept that promise by expanding their access to Cal Grant financial aid.

“The Cal Grant Transfer Entitlement is open to students under 28 years of age. This is an arbitrary cap that does not reflect the reality of today’s veterans, who often serve for years before returning home to seek higher education. It amounts to a penalty for serving our country.

“AB 1361 was truly a bipartisan bill. It passed the Legislature without a single ‘no’ vote. It had the support of numerous veterans groups, business organizations, and the California Student Aid Commission. Among those veterans groups in support were AMVETS – Department of California; American Legion – Department of California; California Association of Veteran Service Officers; California Military Officers Association of America; California State Commanders Veterans Council; and Vietnam Veterans of America – California State Council.

“While I am disappointed by the Governor’s veto, I will continue working on behalf of our veterans in future legislative sessions. They have given us their best and they deserve ours as well.”
